“If looks could kill.”
William
Fuck no. No way in hell will I let Lucy work for the likes of Jake Summers. Unfortunately, I know firsthand what a douche bag this guy is. Frank and many others, however, aren’t privy to some of his more private dealings.
You see, he hired me once. Once. That’s it. After bailing him out of jail and learning he’d been running around on his wife with a local stripper, I never wanted to work with him again. At the time his wife, Janet, had been nine months pregnant with his child. Call me self-righteous, but I make a point not to deal with people like him. Because I can afford not to, I get to pick and choose my clients. And I do so very carefully.
“What kind of secretary?” Lucy asks naively.
Jake’s snake-like eyes travel over Lucy’s young, flawless features, dipping down to her breast and legs, dangling from the stool. My fist clenches when he starts talking again.
“Just the usual, you know. Answer the phones, files papers,” Jake smiles like an idiot. “And of course the occasional coffee-run.”
Like he can’t get his own coffee. I almost roll my eyes.
Lucy seems intrigued, tapping her nails against the countertops. “Really? What kind of business do you run?”
Jake smirks proudly. “I own a carwash, not far from Glasgow’s welcome center. It’s the best carwash in town.”
It’s the only carwash in town.
“I wouldn’t mind washing cars,” Lucy says, and the image of her running around in a swimsuit enters my mind. Along with the image of a pack of men sniffing around, just waiting to take advantage.
“This gal here is a worker, I can tell,” Frank pipes in.
“Well, I’m not really looking for anymore washers. But I’m in sore need of a secretary, what do you say, Lucy? I’ll hire you on the spot, seeing as how Frank here is willing to vouch for you.”
Looking down, I realize the man is sporting a bulge in his sweats.
Disgusting.
Immediately I start racking my brain for a solution, one that involves Lucy far away from jerk, I mean Jake Summers.
“Okay… sure, why not,” Lucy agrees before I can come up with something, causing me to bite my tongue. Literally and figuratively.
“Perfect!” Jake leans in to give Lucy a high-five, which she hesitantly returns.
Lucy Abbott is a smart girl, I can sense that much. I still don’t want her around scum like Jake, though. Before I can say or do anything, my breakfast arrives. I’d been starving when we got here, but not now. Not now that I know Lucy is going to be working with a lecher.
“Aren’t you going to eat?” Lucy asks, her attention back on me.
I meet her stare, instantly drowning in the green pools of her orbs. “Concerned for my well-being?” I snark.
She laughs. “Don’t worry; I won’t be breaking into your house anytime, soon. By the way, where do you live?” she adds.
I take a bite of steak, chewing slowly before I answer, “Close by.”
“How did you two meet?” Jake interrupts.
